Tally Crow vs FreshBooks: which is right for you in 2026?

An honest Tally Crow vs FreshBooks comparison for 2026: real prices, free plan, multi-currency and accounting depth, including where FreshBooks wins.

Tally Crow 6 min read

In short: Tally Crow vs FreshBooks comes down to this: pick FreshBooks if you want a fuller accounting tool, with reports, receipt scanning, proposals and retainers, and you don’t mind paying from $23/mo (USD) with no free plan. Pick Tally Crow if you want simple, any-currency invoicing that’s free to start and cheaper as you grow (Basic €8.99, Pro €14.99), with proper credit notes. Both prices checked in August 2026.

Full disclosure: we make Tally Crow, so we’ve kept this honest, including where FreshBooks beats us. They’re not really the same kind of tool. FreshBooks is an accounting platform that happens to do lovely invoices. Tally Crow is simple, any-currency invoicing (plus expenses, credit notes and getting paid) that deliberately stops short of full accounting. This piece is here to help you tell which one fits how you actually work.

Which is cheaper, Tally Crow or FreshBooks?

On the sticker price, Tally Crow is the cheaper tool, and it’s the only one of the two with a free plan.

  • Tally Crow (EUR): starts free (2 invoices a month, 2 clients, no card). Basic is €8.99/mo (€89.90/year), Pro is €14.99/mo (€149.90/year) for unlimited invoices, recurring invoices and your branding removed. Annual billing is roughly 17% off.
  • FreshBooks (USD): Lite is $23/mo (up to 5 billable clients), Plus $43/mo (50 clients), Premium $70/mo (unlimited clients). There’s a 30-day free trial but no free plan, and extra team members are $11/mo each. A Select tier exists as custom “let’s talk” pricing.

Two things to hold in mind. First, the currencies differ (we quote euros, FreshBooks quotes US dollars), so the exact gap depends on the exchange rate on the day. Second, FreshBooks’ lower tiers cap how many clients you can bill: Lite tops out at 5 billable clients, so a freelancer with a growing client list moves up the plans (and the price) sooner than the headline suggests.

If your need is “send professional invoices and get paid, without spending much”, Tally Crow is built for exactly that. If your need is “run my books properly”, the FreshBooks price buys you more, which is the next section.

Tally Crow starts free (2 invoices a month, no card), so you can send a real invoice and get paid before you decide whether to pay for anything.

What does FreshBooks do that Tally Crow doesn’t?

This is where FreshBooks earns its price, and we’d rather say it plainly than pretend otherwise. FreshBooks is the more complete accounting tool of the two.

FreshBooks gives you fuller accounting and reports, expense and receipt scanning, estimates, proposals, retainers and accountant access. If you want your bookkeeping, your reports and your invoices living in one place, and you want your accountant to log in and work alongside you, FreshBooks is designed for that.

Tally Crow is honestly not that tool. As of August 2026, Tally Crow does not do:

  • Full double-entry / general-ledger accounting (no chart of accounts, journals or balance sheet).
  • Filing tax or VAT returns. It calculates VAT on your invoices, but it doesn’t submit anything to a tax authority.
  • Open-banking bank feeds or auto-reconciliation. Our “bank accounts” are saved IBAN/BIC payment details shown on invoices, not live connected feeds.
  • Receipt OCR. You can upload and attach a receipt to an expense, but the fields are typed in by hand, not scanned automatically.
  • Time tracking, projects or proposals, and there’s no native iOS/Android app (it’s a responsive web app), and it’s single-user per account today.

So if receipt scanning, proper reports or proposals are on your must-have list, FreshBooks is the better fit, and it’s fair to pay for it.

What does Tally Crow do that suits freelancers better?

Where Tally Crow wins is simplicity, currency flexibility and price, the things a solo freelancer or creator usually cares about most.

  • Free to start, cheap to grow. A genuinely useful free plan (no card), then €8.99 or €14.99 a month, rather than starting at $23/mo with no free option.
  • Any-currency invoicing that works anywhere. Invoice and issue credit notes in any currency, with VAT handling, without bolt-ons. It’s euro-friendly with strong EU and VAT support, but it isn’t geo-locked to the EU. (Online card payment via the pay-now link covers the currencies Stripe supports; you can always be paid by bank transfer in any currency.)
  • Proper credit notes. First-class, linkable to the original invoice, and unused credit can be deducted on a client’s next invoice. Plenty of simple tools skip this.
  • Low online-payment fees. An optional pay-now link with a small application fee: 2% on Free, 1% on Basic, 0.5% on Pro, on top of the card processor’s own fee. You’re the merchant of record.
  • Simple by design. No accounting experience required, guided onboarding, and a polished PDF in one of three designs. It’s not a general ledger you have to learn.

You also get expenses with categories and receipt upload, automatic due-soon reminders, a one-click overdue reminder, per-currency analytics and a one-click “download my data” export. See features for the full list.

Who should choose FreshBooks, and who should choose Tally Crow?

Match the tool to your situation:

  • Choose FreshBooks if you want an accounting tool, not just an invoicing one: reports, receipt scanning, estimates, proposals and retainers, with your accountant able to log in, and you’re comfortable paying from $23/mo (USD) with client caps on the lower tiers.
  • Choose Tally Crow if you want simple, professional, any-currency invoicing that’s free to start and cheap to grow, with real credit notes, and you don’t need full double-entry accounting, tax filing or bank feeds.

A rough rule: the more your question is “help me run my books”, the more FreshBooks makes sense. The more it’s “help me send a good invoice and get paid, without the accounting overhead”, the more Tally Crow does.

It depends on what you need. If you want simple, any-currency invoicing that's free to start and cheap to grow, Tally Crow suits most freelancers and creators. No, and we're clear about it. Tally Crow is invoicing, credit notes, expenses and getting paid, with VAT calculated on invoices. It does not do full double-entry accounting, file tax or VAT returns, connect bank feeds, or scan receipts. FreshBooks does more of that.

Yes. There's no long setup: add your clients and bank details, set your invoice numbering (you can resume from a starting number), and start sending. You can sign up free and try it on a couple of invoices before moving everything across. You own your data and can export it or delete your account at any time.

Tally Crow lets you invoice and issue credit notes in any currency and works in any country, with strong EU and VAT support. Online card payment through the pay-now link covers the currencies Stripe supports, and bank transfer works in any currency. FreshBooks is billed in US dollars, so if invoicing in several currencies matters to you, confirm its current support on its own pricing page before you commit.
